The Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority's (ADAFSA) Collaborating Centre for Camel Diseases, accredited by the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), continues to advance scientific research, diagnostics, and capacity building in the realm of camel diseases. Over the past two years, the centre has processed more than 100,000 samples, conducting over 500,000 analyses for various camel diseases. It has developed over 150 advanced laboratory tests to accurately identify pathogens, supporting strategic plans for disease prevention, control, and food security.
In response to global health challenges like the coronavirus pandemic, the centre has pioneered methods, analysis kits, guidelines, and control procedures, gaining international recognition. It has established the first camel biobank, preserving biological isolates and tissue culture cells crucial for disease control, vaccine development, and scientific research.

Using cutting-edge molecular diagnostic techniques, the centre has diagnosed and identified genetic strains of 15 pathogens, including those resistant to antibiotics. It conducts antibiotic susceptibility tests, advises on treatment protocols, and promotes antibiotic awareness globally.
Upgrades to sequencing facilities enhance disease mapping and management in camels and other animals. Collaborating internationally, the centre evaluates PPR serology and develops educational kits for veterinary education, enhancing diagnostic skills regionally.
With over 30 scientific publications in leading journals, the centre contributes significantly to One Health initiatives, linking animal and human health research. The Middle East Camel Network (CAMENET), involving GCC countries and beyond, facilitates regional cooperation on camel health, epidemiological surveys, disease mapping, and quality system development in veterinary labs.
Director Asma Abdi underscores ongoing efforts to develop camel vaccines, strengthen risk assessment, and support veterinary education, crucial for sustainable agriculture and robust biosecurity systems. The centre's leadership in camel disease management underscores the UAE's commitment to global animal health and biosecurity.
Abdi highlights the challenges posed by camel physiology and genetics in disease research, stressing the need for specialized studies to detect and manage viral, bacterial, parasitic, and fungal pathogens affecting camel health and economic stability. The centre stands as a pivotal scientific resource addressing these complex challenges at local, regional, and global levels.
