Abu Dhabi Airports: 6.9 Million Passengers Served in 3 Months

Abu Dhabi Airports, the operator of five airports in the emirate, has reported a remarkable surge in passenger traffic, with 6.9 million passengers served in the first three months of 2024. This represents a substantial increase of over 35 per cent compared to the same period in 2023, when the figure stood at 5.1 million passengers.

The upswing in passenger numbers is attributed to robust global demand for passenger and commercial services, driving a positive trajectory in flight movements. A total of 61,737 flight movements were recorded in the first quarter of 2024, marking an 11.4 per cent increase from the same period last year.

Notably, Zayed International Airport (AUH) played a pivotal role in this growth, welcoming over 6.8 million passengers during the first quarter alone. The newly launched terminal witnessed impressive surges, with traffic movements rising by 26.6 per cent and passenger traffic by 36 per cent.

During this period, AUH expanded its airline portfolio with the return of Turkmenistan Airlines and the introduction of Hainan Airlines operating to Haikou, China. This brings the total number of regular scheduled operators at the airport to 29 airlines, further enhancing connectivity and accessibility.

London retained its status as the top destination city, with nearly 290,000 passengers traveling to and from the UK capital. The top five destinations also included Mumbai (240,681), Kochi (206,139), Delhi (203,395), and Doha (184,317), showcasing the airport's strategic connectivity to key global hubs.

Elena Sorlini, managing director and CEO at Abu Dhabi Airports, expressed satisfaction with the impressive figures, highlighting the airports' success in attracting a growing number of airlines and passengers worldwide. She emphasized the company's commitment to continually investing in facilities and services to enhance the passenger experience and overall value proposition.

In addition to passenger growth, cargo traffic also experienced significant expansion, with 162,000 tonnes of air freight handled across all airports in the first quarter. This marks a substantial increase of 25.6 per cent compared to the same period in 2023, demonstrating Abu Dhabi's pivotal role in facilitating global trade and commerce.

The surge in cargo shipments includes various categories such as general cargo and specialized products like express deliveries, temperature-controlled items, and pharmaceuticals. These figures underscore Abu Dhabi's significance as a vital hub for air freight, contributing to the region's economic growth and development.
