A collision involving approximately 100 cars on an icy expressway in eastern China resulted in nine people sustaining injuries on Friday, as reported by state media. Images of the incident depicted chaotic scenes, with passenger vehicles tightly packed against each other. Official broadcaster CCTV shared footage showing cars in disarray, some elevated at odd angles, and others reduced to twisted metal wreckage.
The accident took place on a wet road in Suzhou, a city located around an hour west of Shanghai by car. The aftermath revealed broken glass scattered on the road, while emergency responders in orange attire navigated through the scene, and onlookers gathered nearby. Although there were no reported fatalities, three individuals were hospitalized for injuries, and six others suffered minor scratches, according to a WeChat post by local traffic police.
The incident occurred around 7 am local time, and normal traffic flow has since been restored, as stated in the post. The police attributed the slippery road conditions to recent cool and rainy weather, urging drivers to exercise caution. Meteorological authorities had issued a low-temperature warning earlier in the week for large areas of southern China, following weeks of severe winter weather nationwide.
China frequently experiences road accidents due to a lack of stringent safety controls.a
