9 children die in Afghanistan due to landmine explosion.

In southeastern Afghanistan's Geru district, a tragic incident unfolded as nine children lost their lives in a blast caused by a landmine dating back to the country's prolonged conflict, as reported by a provincial official on Monday. Hamidullah Nisar, the head of Ghazni province's information and culture department, revealed that the explosion occurred while a group of young boys and girls were playing with the mine on Sunday.

Nisar explained to AFP, "An unexploded mine left over from the time of the Russian invasion went off when they were playing with it. Unfortunately, it killed nine children." The victims, consisting of five girls and four boys, were between the ages of four and ten, according to Ghazni police.

Afghanistan's landscape remains heavily marked by remnants of past conflicts, including unexploded mines, grenades, and mortars. These hazardous remnants, dating back to the Soviet invasion in 1979, the subsequent civil war, and the 20-year Taliban insurgency, pose grave threats to civilians.

Although violence has notably decreased since the Taliban assumed control in August 2021, putting an end to their longstanding insurgency, incidents involving unexploded ordnance and mines persist. The International Committee of the Red Cross highlights children as the primary victims of such incidents.

In a separate incident on the same day, tragedy struck again as another child lost their life, and five individuals sustained injuries due to an explosion caused by unexploded ordnance in Herat province. Local police reported the incident via the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter.
