7 People Shot on Kentucky Highway, Suspect Still at Large in Ongoing Manhunt

Authorities in Kentucky are actively searching for a suspect after at least seven people were shot while traveling along a rural stretch of Interstate 75 near the town of London. The incident unfolded just before 6 p.m. local time on Saturday, prompting an intense manhunt across the area, which includes rugged terrain near the Daniel Boone National Forest.

According to initial reports, the gunfire came from either a wooded area or an overpass, targeting vehicles driving on the highway. Local police responded quickly to reports of the shooting, with the Laurel County Sheriff's Office confirming that seven individuals were injured, some of them by gunshots. Fortunately, no fatalities have been reported at this time.

The town of London, which has a population of around 8,000, is located approximately 90 miles south of Lexington. In a Facebook post, London Mayor Randall Weddle addressed the community, urging residents to remain cautious while the suspect is still at large. "Keep your doors locked while this guy is on the loose," he warned.

A section of the interstate near the shooting site was temporarily closed to traffic as authorities conducted their investigation, though it was later reopened despite the suspect remaining at large. Kentucky State Police, along with local law enforcement, are spearheading the search effort.

Three hours after the incident, the Laurel County Sheriff's Office named Joseph A. Couch, a 32-year-old white male, as a "person of interest" in the case. In an urgent social media post, police described Couch as "armed and dangerous," warning the public not to approach him. He is believed to be approximately 5'10" tall and weighing around 154 pounds. Authorities are asking anyone with information about Couch’s whereabouts to contact the London-Laurel County 911 Center or dial 911.

Federal agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) have been called in to assist Kentucky State Police in what the agency described as a "critical incident" in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

The shooting on I-75 comes in the wake of another tragic incident in the U.S., just days after a high school shooting in Winder, Georgia, left two students and two teachers dead, with nine others wounded. In that case, a 14-year-old student was charged in connection with the shooting, along with his father, who was accused of providing access to the weapon used.

Back in Kentucky, as the search for the suspect continues, law enforcement remains on high alert, with community members anxiously awaiting further updates on the situation
