6th Construction Worker's Body Retrieved from US Bridge Tragedy Site

The sixth and final victim of the tragic bridge collapse in Baltimore, Maryland, has been identified by authorities as 37-year-old Jose Mynor Lopez, a dedicated construction worker from the area. The catastrophic incident occurred on March 26 when the Francis Scott Key Bridge was struck by a container ship named Dali, leading to its collapse. The collision, resulting from the ship's power failure, claimed the lives of six construction workers who were engaged in repair work on the bridge.

Baltimore Mayor Brandon M. Scott, in a somber announcement on social media, confirmed the recovery of Jose Mynor Lopez's body, marking a significant milestone in the ongoing recovery efforts. The Unified Command, comprising law enforcement, coast guard, and governmental agencies, extended their deepest condolences to Lopez's family as they notified them of the tragic loss.

Maryland State Police expressed that the retrieval of Lopez's body is a crucial step forward in the recovery operation. Mayor Scott emphasized the determination to fully reopen the affected shipping channel, symbolizing the conclusion of this challenging chapter in the recovery process.

The 1,000-foot-long Dali container ship had issued a distress signal just moments before the collision, prompting authorities to halt traffic on the bridge, potentially preventing further casualties. Despite these efforts, an eight-member construction crew, tasked with repairing potholes on the bridge, was unable to evacuate in time, and tragically, they were swept into the Patapsco River along with tons of debris.

Miraculously, two workers from the crew were rescued from the river, one requiring medical attention while the other emerged unscathed. In the wake of this devastating event, both the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the National Transportation Safety Board have initiated criminal investigations to comprehensively understand the circumstances surrounding the bridge collapse.
