69-Year-Old Man Dies in Brooklyn Apartment Fire from E-Scooter Battery

A tragic fire in a Brooklyn apartment, sparked by a faulty lithium-ion battery in an e-scooter, has claimed the life of a 69-year-old man. The devastating blaze erupted in the victim's second-floor apartment on Brighton 3rd Street, near Brightwater Court in Brighton Beach.

The fire's intensity was so severe that it blocked the exit from the apartment, trapping the elderly man inside. Firefighters responded quickly, but the flames spread rapidly, causing significant damage to the home. The incident resulted in the death of the 69-year-old, whose identity has not yet been released.

Two other occupants of the apartment—a 32-year-old woman and a 35-year-old man—sustained injuries while attempting to extinguish the flames themselves. This risky decision to tackle the fire proved dangerous, as dealing with a battery fire can be unpredictable. The fire marshal noted that they managed to escape with only minor injuries. Two children who were also present in the apartment managed to self-evacuate and did not suffer any injuries.

Fire officials emphasized the importance of not trying to put out lithium-ion battery fires independently. "I strongly recommend you do not attempt to extinguish these on your own," one official cautioned. "Your conventional fire extinguishers will really not be as effective as they would be in other fires."

In total, about a dozen fire units, including 60 firefighters and emergency medical services personnel, were dispatched to the scene. Firefighters acted swiftly, stretching hose lines and bringing the fire under control before it could spread to neighboring apartments.

Fire department officials highlighted the unique challenges posed by lithium-ion battery fires, stating, "When lithium-ion batteries ignite, it's a much more serious, much more involved fire." Fortunately, the rapid response from firefighters helped contain the blaze, preventing further destruction.

This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers associated with lithium-ion batteries, especially in personal mobility devices like e-scooters. Authorities urge residents to exercise caution and take the necessary precautions when handling and charging these devices to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
