6.9 million people passed through Abu Dhabi airports in the first quarter of 2024.

Abu Dhabi Airports has witnessed remarkable growth in passenger numbers, recording a substantial increase of 35.6% in the first quarter of 2024 compared to the same period last year. With operations spanning across five airports within the emirate, the entity managed to handle over 6.9 million passengers during this period, a significant surge from the 5.1 million passengers recorded previously.

The surge in passenger traffic can be attributed to strong global demand for both passenger and commercial services. During the first quarter, a positive upswing in flight movements was observed, with a total of 61,737 movements recorded, indicating a robust performance in aviation activities.

Zayed International Airport, in particular, played a significant role in this growth, handling over 6.8 million passengers alone. The airport's new terminal, inaugurated in February, contributed to the expansion of its airline database, welcoming the return of Turkmenistan Airlines and the launch of Hainan Airlines operations to Haikou, China. By the end of Q1-2024, the airport had a total of 29 regular scheduled operators.

The recent relaunch of British Airways operations from Zayed International Airport after a four-year hiatus further solidifies the airport's position as a leading hub. The resumption of daily flights from Abu Dhabi to London Heathrow resulted in notable increases of 26.6% in movements and 36% in passenger traffic, highlighting the airport's strategic importance.

London retained its status as the top destination city, with nearly 290,000 passengers recorded during the first quarter. Other prominent destinations included Mumbai, Kochi, Delhi, and Doha, reflecting the diverse travel preferences of passengers.

Elena Sorlini, Managing Director and CEO at Abu Dhabi Airports, emphasized the commitment to enhancing the passenger experience and overall value proposition. Investments in facilities and services aim to satisfy existing airline partners, attract new ones, and ultimately meet the evolving needs of passengers.

In addition to passenger traffic, cargo operations also experienced significant expansion in Q1-2024, with 162,000 tonnes of air freight handled across all airports, marking a notable increase of 25.6%. This growth underscores the overall resilience and vitality of Abu Dhabi's aviation sector, positioning it as a key player in the global aviation landscape.
