69 Killed in Bihar and Nepal Due to Severe Thunderstorms

Post by: Layla Badr

This week, strong thunderstorms hit eastern India and parts of Nepal, leading to the deaths of at least 69 people, officials said on Saturday.

In India’s Bihar state, government disaster teams reported that 61 people died on Thursday and Friday due to powerful thunder and lightning. In Nepal, eight more people were killed on Wednesday and Thursday from lightning strikes, according to local officials.

These types of weather events — like heavy rain, lightning, and floods — happen every year and often cause many deaths. But scientists say these dangerous storms are getting worse because of rising global temperatures. Warmer air holds more moisture and energy, which makes storms stronger and more deadly.

The weather office in Bihar warned that more heavy rain is expected on Saturday.

Last year, weather experts said that climate change is causing more lightning strikes across India. On average, about 1,900 people die from lightning every year in the country.

A study by researchers at Fakir Mohan University in showed that lightning strikes caused over 1 lakh (101,309) deaths in India between 1967 and 2020. The number of deaths from lightning has gone up sharply, especially between 2010 and 2020.

These new reports are a reminder of how dangerous weather can be and how important it is to stay safe during storms.
