In northern Afghanistan, devastating floods have claimed the lives of 66 individuals, according to a provincial official's statement on Sunday. This calamity follows weeks of relentless flooding, which has submerged farms, villages, and entire communities across the country.
The recent heavy floods struck multiple districts of Faryab province on Saturday night, resulting in significant human and financial losses. Asmatullah Muradi, spokesperson for the Faryab governor, confirmed the grim toll, reporting that 66 people lost their lives in the disaster. Additionally, at least five individuals sustained injuries, while others remain unaccounted for.

The aftermath of the floods paints a dire picture: more than 1,500 houses have been damaged, over 1,000 acres of agricultural land lie submerged, and hundreds of livestock have perished. The scale of destruction underscores the profound impact of the natural disaster on the affected communities.
This latest catastrophe comes on the heels of a tragic incident in the western province of Ghor, where flash flooding claimed the lives of over 50 people just a day prior. Moreover, less than two weeks ago, torrential floods in northern Baghlan province resulted in the deaths of more than 300 individuals, as reported by the UN World Food Programme.
As recovery efforts face formidable challenges due to destroyed infrastructure and logistical constraints, Taliban officials have expressed concerns that the death toll could rise further. Accessing affected regions and delivering vital aid has been hindered by the extensive damage wrought by the floods, exacerbating the plight of those already grappling with the aftermath of the disaster.
