A strong earthquake of 6.5 magnitude rattled southern Mexico today, affecting Acapulco and the capital, claiming the lives of at least two individuals and inflicting severe damage close to the epicenter.

The seismic event was recorded just before 8:00 am local time, with its epicenter located approximately 14 kilometers southwest of San Marcos in Guerrero. The tremor reverberated through Mexico City, nearly 400 kilometers away, prompting citywide emergency alerts and causing thousands to evacuate into the streets on this holiday weekend.

In the capital city, a tragic incident involved a 60-year-old man who fell while attempting to escape his second-floor apartment. City officials reported at least 12 injuries, although no substantial structural damage was noted across the metropolitan region.

Amidst the shaking, President Claudia Sheinbaum was delivering her morning briefing when the alarms triggered, resulting in a swift evacuation of the presidential palace as a precaution.

The most severe destruction occurred in San Marcos, where numerous homes were either completely flattened or heavily damaged. Guerrero Governor Evelyn Salgado confirmed that a woman in her fifties perished when her residence collapsed during the quake. Local assessments indicated around 50 houses sustained significant damage, with almost all structures in the town exhibiting visible fissures.

Witnesses recounted scenes of chaos and despair, with many pointing out the severe damage to their homes. Many residents remained outdoors for hours, fearful of aftershocks.

In Acapulco, a major tourist hotspot, sirens echoed as both locals and tourists evacuated hotels and buildings in distress. Some holidaymakers were spotted rushing out without taking personal belongings.

Mexico is situated at the convergence of five tectonic plates, making it prone to earthquakes. Experts highlight that tremors originating off the Pacific coast, especially near Guerrero, tend to affect Mexico City’s softer lakebed soil, amplifying the seismic waves.

The nation has heavily invested in early warning systems such as mobile alerts and public loudspeakers, which once again played a crucial role in aiding residents to evacuate quickly and avert additional casualties.

Authorities are currently assessing the damage and keeping a watchful eye for aftershocks as recovery efforts begin in the impacted communities.
