A powerful earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan late on Sunday night, causing significant loss of life and widespread damage. The earthquake measured 6.0 on the Richter scale and shook the Nangarhar province, near the border with Pakistan. Initial reports confirm that at least 20 people have died, and hundreds more are feared dead. Rescue operations are ongoing as health officials warn that the final toll may be much higher.
The Earthquake Strikes
According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake occurred at 11:47 p.m. local time and was centered 27 kilometers (17 miles) east-northeast of Jalalabad, the provincial capital of Nangarhar. The quake was shallow, with a depth of only 8 kilometers (5 miles). Shallow earthquakes are often more destructive because the seismic energy reaches the surface with greater intensity.

The tremors were felt across neighboring areas and caused panic among residents. Some people were seen rushing out of their homes in fear, while emergency services quickly mobilized to reach affected villages.
Aftershocks and Additional Tremors
About 20 minutes after the initial 6.0-magnitude quake, another tremor measuring 4.5 in magnitude struck the same province. Such aftershocks are common after major earthquakes and can cause additional damage, especially to buildings already weakened by the first tremor.
Casualties and Injuries
Local health officials reported that at least 15 people were injured and were taken to hospitals for immediate medical treatment. However, the number of casualties is expected to rise as search and rescue teams reach remote villages that were heavily affected.
Sharafat Zaman, a spokesperson for the Nangarhar Health Ministry, said, “The numbers of injured and dead are likely higher, but since the area has limited access and communication, our teams are still on the ground. Once accurate figures are collected, we will share them.”
Preliminary reports indicate that nearly 30 people may have died in a single village, with three entire villages reportedly destroyed. Many residents are trapped under collapsed buildings, and emergency teams are working around the clock to rescue survivors.
Search and Rescue Efforts
Rescue operations have been challenging due to limited access to the affected regions. The mountainous terrain and damaged roads make it difficult for teams to reach some villages. Authorities are coordinating with local and international aid organizations to provide assistance and medical support.
Villagers are relying on nearby neighbors and volunteers to help dig through debris, and temporary shelters are being set up for those who lost their homes. The Afghan government has requested international help to manage the crisis and provide relief materials to affected families.
Health Ministry Statement
The Nangarhar Public Health Department has warned that the numbers of injured and dead are likely to rise. The ministry urged residents to remain calm and follow safety instructions while rescue teams continue their operations. Hospitals in the province are preparing for a possible surge in patients as more injured people are brought in from affected villages.
Health officials have also emphasized the importance of preventing the spread of diseases in the aftermath of the disaster, as lack of clean water, sanitation, and shelter can lead to health crises.
Historical Context of Earthquakes in Afghanistan
Afghanistan is located in a seismically active region and has experienced several devastating earthquakes in the past. One of the deadliest recent earthquakes occurred on October 7, 2023, when a magnitude 6.3 quake struck western Afghanistan. That disaster claimed thousands of lives. The Taliban government estimated that at least 4,000 people died, although the U.N. reported a lower toll of about 1,500.
Earthquakes in Afghanistan are particularly deadly because many buildings are old and poorly constructed, making them vulnerable to collapse even during moderate tremors. The lack of modern earthquake-resistant infrastructure contributes to higher casualties.
Impact on Local Communities
The earthquake has left many communities in shock and despair. Families have lost homes, belongings, and loved ones. Schools, mosques, and other public buildings have also suffered damage, disrupting daily life.
Residents who survived the initial quake are facing difficult conditions, including cold weather, limited food, and a shortage of clean water. Aid agencies are focusing on providing emergency relief such as food, water, blankets, and medical care to affected families.
International Aid and Assistance
Afghanistan often relies on international aid during natural disasters due to its limited resources and infrastructure. In response to the earthquake, several countries and humanitarian organizations have expressed readiness to assist with rescue operations, medical aid, and supplies.
Efforts are also underway to assess the structural safety of buildings and prevent further casualties from aftershocks. Engineers and experts are working to evaluate damaged homes and recommend repairs or rebuilding strategies.
Precautionary Measures and Safety Tips
Authorities have advised residents in earthquake-prone areas to take precautionary measures, including:
Moving to open spaces away from buildings and trees during tremors.
Avoiding use of elevators or staying inside poorly constructed buildings.
Keeping emergency kits ready with essentials like water, food, and medicines.
Following instructions from local authorities and rescue teams.
Schools and offices in affected areas have been temporarily closed to ensure safety, and residents are being encouraged to stay alert for aftershocks.
The Human Cost
Beyond the numbers, the earthquake has left deep emotional scars on the affected communities. Many families are mourning the loss of loved ones, while others struggle with injuries or missing relatives. Relief workers report seeing children and elderly people in trauma, highlighting the urgent need for psychological support alongside physical aid.
Local volunteers have played a crucial role in rescue and relief operations, helping transport injured people, clear debris, and provide food and water. The resilience and bravery of these communities stand out amid the tragedy.
The 6.0-magnitude earthquake in eastern Afghanistan has caused widespread destruction, killed at least 20 people, and left hundreds more in danger. With rescue operations ongoing, authorities warn that the final death toll could rise significantly.
The disaster underscores the vulnerability of Afghanistan to natural calamities and highlights the urgent need for improved infrastructure, disaster preparedness, and support for affected communities. International aid and local efforts are crucial to helping survivors rebuild their lives and recover from this devastating event.
As rescue teams work tirelessly, families wait anxiously for news of their loved ones, and the nation mourns yet another tragedy in a region long challenged by natural disasters.
