Early Wednesday morning, a strong earthquake hit the Hindu Kush area in Afghanistan. The earthquake had a strength of 5.9, said the National Centre for Seismology (NCS).
The shaking happened at 4:43 in the morning (Indian time). The centre of the quake was deep under the ground—about 75 kilometers down. It was at 35.83 degrees North and 70.60 degrees East. NCS shared this information on X (which was earlier called Twitter).

Right now, there are no reports of people getting hurt or buildings falling. But rescue teams and helpers are checking the area to make sure everyone is safe.
The Hindu Kush mountains are in the north-east part of Afghanistan. This place gets a lot of earthquakes because the ground below keeps moving. Afghanistan is between two big pieces of Earth’s crust (called tectonic plates), and they push against each other, which causes earthquakes.
The United Nations said that Afghanistan is already weak because of many years of war and poverty. So when a natural disaster like this happens, it is hard for people to recover.
The Red Cross also said that strong earthquakes happen in Afghanistan almost every year. One of the most dangerous places is Herat, a province in the west of the country. It also lies on a big crack in the Earth’s surface.
In October 2023, big earthquakes hit Herat. One of them had a strength of 6.3. More than 1,000 people died, and many people lost their homes. That event showed how important it is to have better plans and quick help for such disasters.
Right now, workers and helpers are still checking the area. They are making sure that people are safe and that there is no damage.
