Heart failure is often called a silent killer because it develops slowly and without warning. Many people feel completely fine until a major heart problem suddenly appears. This is why taking care of your heart every day is important, even when you feel healthy.
Dr Dmitry Yaranov, a well-known cardiologist and heart transplant surgeon, shared five habits he always avoids to protect his heart. He posted these tips in a video on November 14. His message is simple: small actions today can keep your heart strong for many years.
1. Never ignore your blood pressure
Dr Yaranov says that high blood pressure is dangerous because it shows no early signs. You may feel normal, but still be at risk. He checks his own blood pressure regularly and advises everyone to do the same.
2. Do not skip exercise
According to him, the heart is like any muscle — it becomes weak if it is not used. Even 30 minutes of movement a day can make a big difference. Walking, cycling, or simple home exercises all help.
3. Avoid ultra-processed foods
He warns that packaged and highly processed foods cause inflammation and raise cholesterol levels. These foods slowly harm the heart. Instead, he chooses whole, real foods like fruits, vegetables, nuts, and fresh meals.
4. Never ignore sleep
Dr Yaranov says good sleep is essential for a healthy heart. Poor sleep, or conditions like sleep apnea, can raise blood pressure and increase the risk of heart failure. He makes sure to sleep on time and get enough rest each night.
5. Do not skip preventive medicines
If a doctor prescribes medications like statins or blood pressure tablets, Dr Yaranov believes you should take them. These medicines help prevent serious heart problems and can save lives.
Dr Yaranov explains that heart problems don’t start suddenly. They begin quietly, through years of unhealthy habits. By making small daily changes — such as moving more, eating better, sleeping well, and taking medicines on time — anyone can give their heart a better chance to stay strong and healthy.
