In Aleppo, Syria, a war monitor reported that Israeli airstrikes on Friday targeted Aleppo province, resulting in the deaths of at least 42 individuals, including 36 Syrian soldiers. This marked the deadliest toll for the Syrian army since the onset of the Israel-Hamas conflict. Israel has conducted numerous airstrikes in Syria since the beginning of the civil war in 2011, targeting military positions as well as Iran-backed forces such as Hezbollah and Hamas.

The frequency of these strikes has escalated since the commencement of Israel's conflict with Hamas on October 7th. Friday's airstrike, the second within 24 hours, targeted a Hezbollah rocket depot near Aleppo airport, according to the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The strike reportedly killed 42 individuals, including six Hezbollah members and 36 soldiers. Syrian state news agency SANA, citing a military source, confirmed the attack, stating that it occurred around 1:45 am, resulting in casualties among civilians and military personnel.
Israeli airstrikes also targeted defense factories controlled by pro-Iran groups elsewhere in Aleppo province, as reported by the Observatory. This attack followed another reported Israeli strike in the Damascus countryside, which resulted in the deaths of two civilians and caused material damage.
The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, which originated from unprecedented attacks by Gaza-based Palestinian operatives, has resulted in significant casualties on both sides. Israel's retaliatory campaign has led to thousands of deaths in Gaza, primarily among women and children, according to the Hamas-run health ministry. Additionally, cross-border exchanges between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon have raised concerns about regional escalation.
Hezbollah, an ally of the Syrian government, has been actively involved in the Syrian civil war since at least 2013. The conflict, triggered by the Syrian government's brutal suppression of a 2011 uprising, has claimed hundreds of thousands of lives and involved various foreign actors and jihadist groups.
Recent airstrikes in eastern Syria's Deir Ezzor province resulted in the deaths of 19 individuals, mostly pro-Iran fighters, including two advisers from Iran's Revolutionary Guards, according to the Observatory. Among the casualties was a worker from the World Health Organization. While the Observatory attributed the strikes to Israel, the United States denied involvement.
Israel has refrained from commenting on individual strikes in Syria but has consistently stated its opposition to Iran's expanding presence in the country.
