Kyiv, Ukraine: In a devastating missile strike on Ukraine's Poltava region, at least 41 people were killed and more than 180 injured when two Russian ballistic missiles hit a military education facility and nearby hospital. The attack, which occurred with little warning, has left many trapped under debris, according to reports from Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence.

The Defence Ministry stated that the time between the air raid alarm and the missile impact was so short that many civilians were caught mid-evacuation, unable to reach bomb shelters in time. The missiles struck a hospital and an educational institution, partially demolishing one of the buildings at a telecommunications institute.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the strike on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), sharing initial reports of the destruction and loss of life. "According to available information, two ballistic missiles hit the area, targeting an educational institution and a hospital, partially destroying the telecommunications institute's building," he wrote.
Zelenskyy expressed concern that many people were feared trapped beneath the rubble, and confirmed that rescue operations were in full swing. While several individuals had been rescued, the confirmed death toll rose to 41, with over 180 others suffering injuries of varying severity.
"My deepest condolences to all their relatives and loved ones," Zelenskyy added, mourning the victims of the attack. He ordered a full-scale investigation into the circumstances of the missile strike, ensuring that all necessary emergency services were mobilized to continue the rescue efforts. He also praised the immediate response of those involved in saving lives amid the chaos.
Zelenskyy condemned the strike as a "terror attack," vowing that Russia would face consequences for the assault. He called on international allies to step up support for Ukraine, stressing the urgent need for air defense systems and long-range missiles to protect against future attacks. "Every day of delay means more lost lives," he stated, urging the world to act now.
The attack has once again drawn attention to the escalating conflict between Ukraine and Russia, and the dire humanitarian toll the war continues to exact on civilians caught in the crossfire. As rescue operations continue, the full extent of the damage and the casualty count may rise.
