External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar provided detailed information to the Lok Sabha regarding the unfortunate demise of 403 Indian students in foreign countries since 2018. The reasons for these deaths varied, including natural causes, accidents, and medical conditions. Canada witnessed the highest number of deaths among Indian students, with 91 cases, followed by the United Kingdom with 48.
Jaishankar, addressing concerns about the safety of Indian students abroad, stated that the Ministry is vigilant about their welfare, considering it a top priority. He presented a comprehensive breakdown, revealing that 40 students lost their lives in Russia, 36 in the United States, 35 in Australia, 21 in Ukraine, and 20 in Germany. Additionally, 14 students lost their lives in Cyprus, 10 each in the Philippines and Italy, and nine each in Qatar, China, and Kyrgyzstan.
The timing of Jaishankar's statement is particularly concerning due to recent tragic incidents involving Indian or Indian-origin students in the United States. The deaths of Shreyas Reddy Benigeri in Ohio, Neel Acharya near Purdue University, Vivek Saini in Georgia, and Akul B Dhawan at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign have garnered attention and raised questions about the safety of Indian students in foreign countries.
The Minister emphasized the government's commitment to closely monitoring India's national security interests. Responding to questions on India's foreign policies, Minister of State for External Affairs Raj Kumar Ranjan Singh reiterated the 'Neighbourhood First policy,' emphasizing enhanced connectivity and trade with neighboring countries.
Addressing concerns about the Israel-Hamas conflict, Minister of State for External Affairs V Muraleedharan outlined India's consistent support for a negotiated two-State solution. While condemning the October 7 terror attacks on Israel and expressing sympathy for civilian casualties, India also called for restraint, de-escalation, and stressed the importance of a peaceful resolution through dialogue and diplomacy
