A relatively mild earthquake measuring 3.6 on the Richter scale struck the Dima Hasao district of Assam on Wednesday afternoon, according to seismic data. The tremor occurred at 12:40 pm IST, originating roughly 30 kilometres below ground. The epicentre was recorded at latitude 25.19° N and longitude 92.92° E in the remote hill region.
Preliminary reports from local authorities confirm there are no casualties or structural damages reported so far. Officials say the quake was felt by residents, but its impact appears to have been limited due to the relatively shallow magnitude and remote location.
Assam, part of India’s northeast, sits near several seismic zones and periodically experiences minor to moderate earthquakes. Seismologists emphasize that even smaller tremors serve as reminders of the region’s vulnerability to seismic activity and the need for preparedness.
This latest event comes amid concerns over infrastructure resilience in remote and hilly areas, where early warnings and building standards remain key to mitigating risks. Local disaster management teams have been alerted to monitor the situation and ensure that no hidden damages have been overlooked.
Residents in Dima Hasao district are being urged to remain cautious and report any cracks or unusual structural changes in homes and public buildings. Meanwhile, a full assessment is expected to be carried out by geological and seismic experts in the coming days.
