In a tragic incident that shook Zhuhai, a southern city in China, members of the public gathered to pay their respects to the victims of a violent attack at a sports complex. The attack, which occurred on Monday night, left 35 people dead and 43 others severely injured. A 62-year-old man, identified as Fan, was arrested after he rammed his vehicle into a group of people who were exercising at the complex. The authorities revealed that Fan was deeply upset over his divorce settlement, which is believed to have triggered the devastating act.
As the country mourned, mourners flocked to the scene of the tragedy on Tuesday night, bringing flowers to honor those who lost their lives. This somber vigil continued into Wednesday, with a growing number of tributes left outside the entrance of the sports complex. Volunteers swiftly moved the flowers inside the facility, and messages accompanying the bouquets called for justice. One such message read, "May there be no thugs in heaven. Good deeds will be rewarded, and evil deeds will be punished."
The attack took place just before the Zhuhai Airshow, an important aviation exhibition sponsored by the People's Liberation Army, which had been scheduled to begin shortly after the incident. This event, along with the public tragedy, prompted increased security and a visible police presence around the sports complex, although the area was closed for the time being.

Chinese authorities were slow to release detailed information about the attack. The public had to rely on official statements for facts, while social media posts and videos documenting the aftermath were quickly censored within the country. However, some footage managed to circulate outside China, especially on platforms like X (formerly Twitter), where dissident voices shared videos and eyewitness accounts. Despite the restrictions on media coverage, news of the attack spread quickly, drawing widespread attention.
According to police, their preliminary investigation suggested that Fan had been dissatisfied with the division of assets in his divorce, but further details on the personal circumstances surrounding the divorce and the suspect’s motives were not made public. The authorities have not provided additional details on the victims or any potential links to the attack beyond Fan’s reported emotional state.
Chinese President Xi Jinping responded to the tragedy, calling for the “strict” punishment of the perpetrator and urging local governments to prevent such extreme incidents from occurring in the future. In a statement released by Xinhua, Xi also called for timely intervention in resolving conflicts and disputes, emphasizing the importance of addressing potential risks before they escalate.
The Zhuhai tragedy has left the community in shock, with many questioning how such a horrific act could have occurred in a place that should have been safe for public recreation. As investigations continue, the people of Zhuhai and the nation at large mourn the loss of innocent lives, while hoping for justice and swift resolution of the broader issues that contributed to this tragic event.
