On Wednesday in Washington D.C., three police officers sustained injuries as a gunman continued to open fire from a residence, according to authorities. All injured officers were taken to nearby hospitals with injuries reported as non-life-threatening.
The incident prompted the closure of Benning Road, Southeast, between G Street and Southern Avenue, Southeast. Authorities advised individuals in the vicinity to seek alternate routes via Alabama Avenue and 46th Street in Southeast.
Metropolitan Police Department Chief Pamela A. Smith stated in a news conference that the situation is still active, and the suspect has continued to fire from the location. Officials urged everyone to stay away until the suspect is apprehended.
During the ongoing incident, a fourth officer was also transported to the hospital for minor injuries not related to gunshot wounds, as per a police spokesperson. Law enforcement blocked off several city blocks and placed multiple schools on lockdown.
Due to the shooting response, various roads around the location were closed, and alert status was issued at three elementary schools nearby. Darius Mayfield, a Republican candidate for NJ's 12th Congressional District, who was in D.C., expressed sadness and offered prayers for the injured officers on X (formerly known as Twitter). Mayfield advised remaining vigilant and safe during the active scene.
