A 28-year-old pilot working with Air India Express tragically passed away from a heart attack shortly after landing a flight. The young pilot had recently gotten married. According to reports, he threw up inside the cockpit after completing the landing. Sadly, he could not be saved.
An official from Air India Express confirmed the heartbreaking news. In a statement, the airline said, “We are deeply saddened by the loss of a valued colleague due to a medical issue. Our heartfelt thoughts are with his family during this very difficult time. We are doing everything we can to support them.”
The airline also requested everyone to give the family space to grieve and not spread unnecessary rumours. “We kindly ask everyone to respect the family’s privacy and avoid speculation. We are also working closely with the authorities and will fully support any official procedures,” the airline added.

DGCA’s New Plan for Pilot Rest
This sad incident comes while the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is working on improving rules for pilot duty hours and rest periods. The DGCA wants to make sure that pilots get enough rest and don’t work too many hours, especially during night flights.
As per a report by Hindustan Times, the DGCA told the Delhi High Court in February that it has a step-by-step plan to increase pilots’ weekly rest time. Right now, pilots get 36 hours of rest each week. But starting from July 1, 2025, this will go up to 48 hours.
The DGCA also plans to bring in new limits on how many night flights a pilot can do. These changes will begin from November 1, 2025. On February 24, the Delhi High Court said that the DGCA must follow the dates they promised.
Out of 22 changes planned in the Civil Aviation Requirement (CAR) rules, 15 will be active from July 1, and the remaining will be rolled out by November 1.
Lawyers representing pilot groups asked the court to make sure these deadlines are followed. The DGCA replied through its lawyer, saying, “We have already submitted our plan in writing and we stand by it. The court can now close the case, as the DGCA has promised to follow through with the changes.”
This tragic loss has once again shown the importance of proper rest and health checks for pilots.
