Tehran: Early Wednesday, state media reported that at least 28 Pakistani pilgrims were killed in a tragic accident while traveling to Iraq for a Shiite Muslim ritual. The incident occurred when their bus overturned and caught fire in central Iran's Yazd province.

According to state television, the bus carrying 51 Pakistani pilgrims crashed in front of the Dehshir-Taft checkpoint on Tuesday night. The fire that followed the crash caused severe casualties. As of the latest reports, 28 people have been confirmed dead and 23 others injured, with the number of fatalities potentially rising.

Ali Malek-zadeh, the crisis management chief of Yazd province, provided further details, indicating that some of the injured individuals are in critical condition. Out of the 23 injured, six have been discharged from the hospital, but seven remain in serious condition.

The deceased include 11 women and 17 men. The pilgrims were en route to Iraq to participate in the Arbaeen commemoration, a significant event in the Shiite calendar that observes the 40th day of mourning for Imam Hussein, the grandson of the Prophet Mohammed. The Arbaeen observance is a major pilgrimage, with last year's figures showing approximately 22 million participants in Karbala, the Iraqi city where Hussein and his brother Abbas are interred.

This devastating accident highlights the dangers faced by pilgrims traveling to attend such important religious events and underscores the need for enhanced safety measures for travelers in the region.
