In Houston, Texas, concern mounts over the disappearance of a 23-year-old Indian student in California, adding to a series of similar incidents involving students from the community across the United States. Nitheesha Kandula, a student at California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB), was last seen in Los Angeles on May 28, prompting a widespread search effort by local authorities. The Chief of Police at CSUSB, John Guttierez, issued a public appeal for assistance in locating Kandula, emphasizing the urgency of the situation. The official Twitter account of CSUSB Police shared a #MissingPersonAlert, urging anyone with information on Kandula's whereabouts to contact the authorities immediately.
Described as 5 feet 6 inches tall, weighing approximately 160 pounds, with black hair and black eyes, Kandula's disappearance has sparked concerns within the Indian community and beyond. She was believed to be driving a 2021 Toyota Corolla with a California license plate, although the specific color of the vehicle remains unknown. The uncertainty surrounding her disappearance has prompted a coordinated effort between CSUSB Police and the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) to gather information and expedite search efforts.

Authorities have stressed the importance of public cooperation, urging individuals with any pertinent information to come forward. Contact numbers for both CSUSB Police Department and LAPD's Southwest Division were provided, encouraging the community to assist in any way possible. The disappearance of Kandula is the latest in a series of unsettling incidents involving Indian students in the United States, highlighting the need for increased awareness and vigilance within the community.
Recent months have seen several similar cases, including the disappearance of 26-year-old Rupesh Chandra Chintakind in Chicago and the tragic death of Mohammad Abdul Arfath in Cleveland. Arfath, who had come to the US to pursue a Masters in IT, was found dead in March, underscoring the vulnerability of international students in unfamiliar environments. Additionally, incidents such as the shooting of Amarnath Ghosh in St Louis and the untimely demise of Sameer Kamath in Indiana have further fueled concerns about the safety and security of Indian students in the US.
The string of incidents has prompted calls for enhanced safety measures and support networks for Indian students studying abroad. The case of Akul Dhawan, who tragically succumbed to hypothermia outside a campus building in Illinois, serves as a stark reminder of the risks faced by students, particularly in extreme weather conditions. As investigations into Kandula's disappearance intensify, authorities remain committed to uncovering the truth and ensuring the safety of all students within their jurisdiction.
The incidents have reverberated within the Indian diaspora, sparking conversations about the challenges and risks associated with pursuing higher education abroad. Concerns about racism, violence, and inadequate support systems have prompted calls for greater accountability and proactive measures to safeguard the well-being of students. As the search for Nitheesha Kandula continues, communities both in the US and abroad remain united in their efforts to bring her home safely and prevent similar tragedies in the future.
