Nearly 2,000 individuals experienced symptoms of food poisoning subsequent to partaking in a religious gathering hosted in Koshtwadi village, situated in Maharashtra's Nanded district. The event, characterized by a religious discourse, drew attendees not only from the immediate vicinity but also from neighboring villages such as Sawargaon, Postwadi, Risangaon, and Maski. The communal meal, served around 5 pm, proved to be the source of the ensuing health crisis.
Reports indicate that the onset of symptoms, including vomiting and diarrhea, occurred during the early hours of the following day, prompting a swift response from local authorities. Initially, 150 individuals were admitted to the sub-district hospital in Loha, Nanded, for medical attention. However, as more individuals presented with similar health issues, the total number of patients admitted soared to 870, necessitating their transfer to various healthcare facilities across the region.
To accommodate the influx of patients, additional beds were arranged at the Shankarrao Chavan Government Medical College and the Government Ayurvedic Hospital in Nanded. Simultaneously, samples from affected individuals were collected for investigative purposes, with health officials mobilizing five teams to conduct surveys in the affected villages. Furthermore, a dedicated rapid response team was formed to delve into the root cause of the outbreak and implement necessary measures to contain its spread.
Fortunately, despite the significant scale of the incident, no fatalities were reported among the affected individuals. Officials reassured the public that the patients receiving treatment at different facilities were in stable condition, with plans underway to discharge them following completion of necessary medical interventions. Nonetheless, the incident underscores the importance of stringent food safety measures and highlights the potential risks associated with large-scale gatherings, necessitating heightened vigilance and preparedness to mitigate similar incidents in the future.
