200 Crocodiles Invaded Northern Mexico Cities Amid Heavy Rainfall

Following heavy rainfall from Hurricane Beryl and Tropical Storm Alberto, approximately 200 crocodiles have migrated into urban areas in northern Tamaulipas, Mexico, authorities reported this week. The influx of crocodiles followed significant rainfall that raised water levels in coastal lagoons, prompting the reptiles to venture into cities such as Tampico, Ciudad Madero, and Altamira.

Officials from Tamaulipas state's environmental department, led by Karina Lizeth Saldívar, stated that the recent rains caused an increase in crocodile sightings as water levels in lagoon systems surged. Efforts to manage the situation have resulted in the capture and relocation of around 200 crocodiles, with more anticipated as water levels recede from flooded streets and drainage canals.

The Federal Attorney General's Office for Environmental Protection noted an additional 40 crocodiles captured in June, emphasizing their relocation to safer habitats away from populated areas. Despite these efforts, concerns persist regarding ongoing sightings and potential encounters with urban residents.

The issue gained public attention when videos surfaced on social media showing captured crocodiles restrained in urban settings, prompting widespread discussion and concern among local communities. Authorities underscored that while crocodile attacks in Mexico are rare due to their protected status, vigilance and precautionary measures remain essential as the situation evolves.
