Authorities have charged a 14-year-old boy with murder following a tragic school shooting at Apalachee High School in Georgia. The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, resulted in the deaths of four individuals: two 14-year-old students and two teachers. The teenager faces four counts of felony murder.
According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), the suspect will be charged as an adult. He is scheduled to appear in court on Friday, with the possibility of additional charges pending. The GBI has emphasized that their investigation is ongoing and remains a high-priority case. The agency has also announced that the autopsies for the four victims will be conducted on Thursday.
The firearm used in the shooting was an AR-15-style assault rifle, which was allegedly purchased by the teenager’s father as a holiday gift. This detail has sparked further discussion about parental responsibility and firearm storage. President Joe Biden, addressing reporters in Wisconsin, criticized the lack of secure storage for such weapons and called for greater accountability for parents who allow their children access to firearms.

This incident highlights the ongoing issue of gun violence in the United States, where gun ownership is prevalent and regulations on powerful rifles remain relatively lenient. The case also follows recent developments regarding parental liability in school shootings. In a notable case earlier this year, the parents of a teenager involved in a Michigan school shooting were sentenced to 10 to 15 years in prison, marking the first time in the U.S. that parents were convicted of involuntary manslaughter for their child’s actions in a school shooting.
Public opinion polls indicate widespread support for stricter gun control measures, but efforts to implement new restrictions have faced strong opposition from gun rights advocates and have stalled in the legislative process.
