PESHAWAR, Pakistan — A devastating mudslide triggered by heavy monsoon rain has struck a house in a remote region of northwestern Pakistan, resulting in the deaths of 12 individuals, primarily children, according to rescue officials. The incident occurred overnight in Upper Dir, located in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province near the border with Afghanistan.

Inayat Ali, an official from the state-run emergency service, confirmed that rescuers recovered the bodies of nine children, two women, and one man from the site. The rescue operation is ongoing, but no additional details have been provided at this time.

Authorities have issued warnings about the potential for further landslides and flash floods due to the continuous heavy rainfall that began last month. The current monsoon season, which spans from July through September, has already been marked by severe weather conditions. Since July 1, more than 275 people have lost their lives in rain-related incidents across Pakistan.

The impact of climate change has been increasingly linked to more intense and frequent rainfall events. In 2022, the country experienced unprecedented downpours that inundated one-third of its territory, leading to a tragic death toll of 1,739 people.

As Pakistan grapples with the effects of its annual monsoon season, officials are urging residents in vulnerable areas to remain vigilant and prepared for further adverse weather conditions.
