A tragic maritime incident in the English Channel has led to the deaths of at least 12 people, including women and children. The boat, carrying migrants from northern France aiming to reach Britain, capsized in turbulent waters, resulting in significant casualties.
The vessel, which had approximately 70 people onboard, was inadequately equipped with fewer than eight life jackets. Among the deceased were a pregnant woman and several young women under the age of 18. Emergency services managed to rescue 53 individuals from the water, though many are in critical condition and urgently require medical assistance.
The rescue operation involved three helicopters, two fishing vessels, and two boats deployed to find missing persons and provide aid. Olivier Barbarin, mayor of Le Portel near Boulogne-sur-Mer, remarked on the disaster, stating, “Unfortunately, the bottom of the boat ripped open. If people don’t know how to swim in the agitated waters... it can go very quickly.

Guirec Le Bras, the city’s prosecutor, indicated that the deceased were “primarily of Eritrean origin,” but officials have yet to confirm their exact nationalities.
This incident is part of a disturbing pattern of similar tragedies in the English Channel, where migrants frequently attempt perilous crossings to reach Britain. This latest capsizing is one of the deadliest incidents of the year. The maritime prefecture emphasized the hazardous nature of the channel, one of the busiest maritime sectors globally, with over 600 merchant ships passing through daily and challenging weather conditions that make it particularly dangerous.
