11,000 Artists Unite Against AI's Unlicensed Use, Call It a Major Unjust Threat

Over 11,500 artists from various creative fields, including ABBA singer Bjorn Ulvaeus, actress Julianne Moore, and Nobel Prize-winning author Kazuo Ishiguro, have signed a statement raising concerns about the unlicensed use of artificial intelligence (AI) in their industries. This growing movement reflects increasing anxiety about how tech companies are using existing creative works, such as music, literature, and film, to train AI models without permission from their original creators.

The statement, endorsed by stars of music, literature, screen, and stage, highlights the potential threat posed by the use of AI-generated content on the livelihoods of artists. It reads: “The unlicensed use of creative works for training generative AI is a major, unjust threat to the livelihoods of the people behind those works, and must not be permitted.”

One of the prominent voices behind this movement is British composer Ed Newton-Rex, a former executive at Stability AI, one of the companies accused of using copyrighted material without consent. In an interview, Newton-Rex expressed concern over how AI firms refer to these works as “training data,” which he said dehumanizes the creators’ efforts. He emphasized that these works represent people’s hard work—their writing, art, and music—which deserves protection and fair compensation.

This growing concern is not limited to one creative sector. In Hollywood, studios have been experimenting with AI, using technology to create realistic digital replicas of deceased actors or generating computer-based background characters for large-scale scenes. However, this has sparked fears that AI could replace human actors or diminish the value of creative contributions. Some in the industry are particularly worried about the ethical implications of using AI to generate content without permission, fueling a larger debate about AI's place in the arts.

Newton-Rex’s statement follows a series of legal challenges against AI companies. Last year, authors such as John Grisham, Jodi Picoult, and George R.R. Martin launched a lawsuit against OpenAI, accusing the firm of "systematic theft on a mass scale" by using their written works without permission to train its models. Meanwhile, Hollywood stars Pedro Pascal, Jane Fonda, and Mark Hamill recently endorsed an AI safety bill in California aimed at protecting artists' rights, though the bill was ultimately vetoed by Governor Gavin Newsom.

While many creators are pushing back against AI’s encroachment on the arts, some have chosen to embrace the technology. Last week, Meta, Facebook's parent company, announced a partnership with actor Casey Affleck and horror film studio Blumhouse to test its AI movie-generating software by producing a series of short films, signaling a different approach to AI in the creative world.

Despite these developments, the statement from Newton-Rex and other signatories, including Radiohead’s Thom Yorke, author James Patterson, and actor Kevin Bacon, underscores the urgent need to address how AI is being used in creative industries and the need for regulatory measures to protect the original creators’ rights.

The growing number of voices behind the statement highlights the widespread concern that AI’s unregulated use in creative fields could have far-reaching consequences for artists and the industries that support them.
