Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, now 100 years old, has captured attention as images surfaced of him waiting in line to vote for Vice President Kamala Harris. Just months ago, Carter's grandson, Jason Carter, shared that his grandfather was determined to live long enough to participate in the upcoming election, specifically expressing his desire to vote for Harris. Jason recalled Carter saying to his son, Chip, "I’m only trying to make it to vote for Kamala Harris."

However, the sight of the elderly statesman in line raised concerns regarding his health. Critics expressed dismay at the scenario, with one observer stating, “The Kamala campaign is planning to harvest Jimmy Carter’s ballot today at the hospice facility where he’s being kept. Someone in Carter’s physical and mental state is unable to vote. He’s non-verbal, can’t move, and isn’t even aware he’s alive. This is criminal and disgusting.” Another commenter added, “Dude, that was sad and degrading how they wheeled him out like that. Yeah, no way he can vote.”
These sentiments were echoed by others, with one person speculating, “I am pretty sure this is one of Kamala's strongest support groups: ‘non-verbal, can’t move, and barely alive.’”
This incident coincides with the early voting period in Georgia, where over 250,000 ballots had been cast by 4 p.m. on the first day—nearly double the turnout from the same time in 2020. Georgia remains a pivotal swing state, having been a significant battleground in the contentious 2020 election, where Joe Biden narrowly defeated Donald Trump. Early polling suggests that Harris may perform even better than Biden among Georgia voters.
In related news, a Georgia judge temporarily blocked a new rule requiring poll workers to hand-count ballots in the upcoming election, a measure promoted by Trump’s Republican allies following his loss in 2020. Fulton County Superior Court Judge Robert McBurney ruled that “no election superintendent (or member of a board of elections and registration) may refuse to certify or abstain from certifying election results under any circumstance.”
Carter, the oldest living former president, has been in hospice care for over 19 months, with his family announcing this in February 2023. Despite his advanced age and health challenges, Jason Carter has noted that his grandfather remains "more alert and interested in politics and the war in Gaza," expressing that the former president is still capable of laughter and love.
