A quirky trend that began with just four students in China has exploded into a viral sensation, with over 100,000 students joining a late-night bike ride in search of soup dumplings. The phenomenon unfolded in the city of Zhengzhou, Henan province, where thousands of students took to the streets on their public share bikes, embarking on a 50-kilometer journey to the nearby city of Kaifeng to enjoy its famous guan tang bao soup dumplings. The event, however, caused significant disruption to daily traffic, with roads being blocked and authorities forced to deploy extra security to manage the crowd.

The trend started when four students, passionate about the soup dumplings from Kaifeng, set off on their bikes one evening, documenting their journey on social media. What started as a small-scale adventure quickly gained momentum, as more and more students joined in. By the time the ride reached its peak, the streets of Zhengzhou and Kaifeng were filled with students, with the city of Kaifeng quickly reaching its capacity. Public spaces and local restaurants were packed with the influx of young travellers, and videos from the scene showed a sea of bikes flooding the Zhengkai highway, which connects Zhengzhou to Kaifeng.
Liu Lulu, a student from Henan University, shared her experience, describing the sense of camaraderie and excitement that defined the ride. “People sang together and cheered for each other while climbing uphill together. I could feel the passion of the young people. And it was much more than a bike ride,” she said. The sense of adventure and youthful energy was palpable, as the students not only sought soup dumplings but also explored the culture and history of Kaifeng.
As the event gained momentum, local authorities in Zhengzhou were forced to intervene. They urged students to return to their campuses, either by bike or using a free bus service. To prevent future incidents, several universities in Zhengzhou implemented stricter rules, including banning bikes on campus and introducing a pass system for students wishing to leave. In addition, temporary restrictions were placed on roads and bike paths for the weekend, and bike-sharing companies introduced measures to limit the use of bikes outside designated areas, including remotely locking bikes taken beyond those regions.
The trend’s impact was felt far beyond just the students and local authorities. Henan’s media outlet highlighted the “surge of young travellers” to Kaifeng, which saw a notable boost in tourism thanks to the viral trend. The influx of students brought a renewed sense of energy to the small, ancient city, with many students taking the opportunity to explore Kaifeng’s cultural and historical landmarks. These youthful travellers were seen as embodying a spirit of curiosity and determination, contributing a fresh vibrancy to the local tourism scene.
The phenomenon of the soup dumpling bike ride has become a symbol of youthful adventure, and it has left a lasting impression on both local communities and the broader tourism industry. What began as a spontaneous ride for food has turned into a celebration of youthful energy and a unique way of exploring the region’s cultural heritage.
