Australia’s Travis Head made the most of a rare chance to open the batting in the first Ashes Test against England at Perth Stadium on Saturday. The 31-year-old scored a brilliant 123 off just 83 balls, leading Australia to an eight-wicket victory inside two days and giving the home side a strong start in the five-match series.
Head, who usually opens in shorter formats, said he often asks to bat at the top but was not guaranteed the opportunity. When Usman Khawaja suffered a back injury and could not bat, Head saw it as the right moment to step in. “It’s been brewing for a bit. I thought it was the right opportunity to do it,” he told reporters. His innings included four sixes and 16 boundaries, displaying a fearless and aggressive approach that set the tone for Australia’s chase.
Stand-in captain Steve Smith praised Head for his remarkable performance. He said the team debated who should open after tea, and Head volunteered. “Trav took it on and played one of the great Ashes knocks,” Smith said. Head added, “I just felt like the moment was right,” showing his confidence and readiness to lead the innings.
Australia’s victory came after England had been bowled out for 172 and 164 in their two innings, while the hosts scored only 132 in the first innings. Despite Australia not performing perfectly in their first innings, Head’s innings completely shifted the momentum in their favour. His powerful shots and excellent timing made it look as if he was playing on an easier wicket than the bowlers were actually facing.
Head described his approach as following a process. “I was just pleased with the way I started and when we got around that 40, 50 partnership, it felt like it was right there for the taking,” he said. His calculated aggression and confidence helped Australia reach the target of 205 runs comfortably. He reached the equal-third fastest century by an Australian in Ashes history, cementing his place among the top performers.
The innings ended when Head went for one big shot too many, hitting a delivery from Brydon Carse straight to fielder Ollie Pope. Head was unfazed, reflecting on his aggressive approach with humor. “I picked out a fielder on the leg side. Happens. I’ve got out worse ways at Optus Stadium than shoving one to mid-wicket,” he said.
Head’s performance not only secured victory but also sent a strong message to England about Australia’s batting depth. Marnus Labuschagne supported well, adding 51 unbeaten runs in the chase. Together, they made the eight-wicket win look easy, despite earlier struggles in the match.
Australia’s opening victory in the Ashes series was a perfect combination of preparation, aggressive batting, and strategic risk-taking. Travis Head’s century, calm decision-making, and confidence at the crease were the key factors in this dominant performance. His innings is likely to be remembered as one of the finest in recent Ashes history and gives Australia a psychological advantage as the series continues.
