TikTok, the popular short-video platform owned by China's ByteDance, has reached a significant milestone: over 200 million monthly active users in Europe. This surge marks a notable increase from 175 million users the previous year, indicating the app's growing influence across the continent. With this growth, approximately one in three Europeans now engage with TikTok regularly.
Globally, TikTok boasts more than 1 billion monthly active users, solidifying its position as a leading social media platform worldwide.

Regulatory Challenges in Europe
Despite its popularity, TikTok has faced scrutiny from European regulators concerning data privacy and protection. In May 2025, Ireland's Data Protection Commissioner (DPC), the EU's lead privacy regulator, imposed a €530 million ($600 million) fine on TikTok. The fine stemmed from concerns that TikTok did not adequately protect European users' personal data, particularly due to remote access by staff in China. The DPC noted that TikTok failed to ensure user data met EU law standards and did not effectively address concerns about possible access by Chinese authorities.
In response, TikTok contested the ruling, asserting that it uses EU-standard contractual clauses and robust data security protocols introduced in 2023. The company also stated it has never received or fulfilled data requests from Chinese authorities. TikTok has appealed the decision, arguing that it could set a damaging precedent for globally operating companies in Europe.
Furthermore, the DPC has launched a new inquiry into TikTok concerning the storage of European user data in China. This investigation follows TikTok's disclosure in April 2025 that a limited amount of EU user data had been temporarily stored on Chinese servers, despite previous assertions that no such data was stored in China.
ByteDance's Valuation and Future Plans
Amid these regulatory challenges, ByteDance is preparing for an employee share buyback that will value the company at more than $330 billion. This move underscores ByteDance's confidence in its long-term growth prospects and its commitment to its workforce.
TikTok's Presence in the United States
While TikTok continues to thrive in Europe, its presence in the United States faces uncertainty. Former President Donald Trump had advocated for the divestment of TikTok's U.S. operations, citing national security concerns. Users in the U.S. have expressed concerns about potential bans and the future of the platform in the country.
TikTok's rapid growth in Europe highlights its increasing influence in the social media landscape. However, the platform must navigate regulatory challenges to maintain its position and continue to expand globally. As ByteDance prepares for significant corporate moves, the future of TikTok will depend on its ability to balance user engagement with compliance across various regions.
