In Venezuela, over 700 individuals arrested during the protests following the contested presidential election have been moved to notorious maximum-security prisons, according to the Venezuelan Prisons Observatory. The detainees, who had initially been held at various police stations nationwide, were transferred in the past week to the infamous Tocuyito and Tocoron prisons, both of which had previously been under gang control.

The transfers have raised serious concerns due to the irregularities surrounding the process. The Venezuelan Prisons Observatory reported that many detainees’ families were not informed of the moves, and the transfers were conducted under questionable conditions. The NGO described the procedures as "irregular," highlighting the lack of communication with the detainees' relatives and legal representatives.

The protests that erupted following President Nicolás Maduro's declaration as the winner of the July 28 election led to the arrest of over 2,400 people. These protests, widely disputed, have been met with strong international condemnation. The opposition, claiming a landslide victory and presenting voting records to support their stance, has faced resistance from the Maduro government, which has refused to release detailed voting results. This refusal has led to non-recognition of Maduro’s victory by the United States, the European Union, and several Latin American countries.

The violence associated with the protests has resulted in 27 fatalities and 192 injuries. The Venezuelan Prisons Observatory has reported that none of the detainees transferred to the maximum-security facilities have been permitted to contact their families or legal representatives.

Of the 2,400 detainees, 1,581 have been categorized as political prisoners by the advocacy group Penal Forum. Among these detainees, 114 are adolescents, with 18 of them being released on bail recently. This brings the total number of youths released to 34. Opposition leader María Corina Machado criticized the government for its treatment of these young detainees, some as young as 13, who have been placed in prisons with older, common criminals. She described the government’s actions as “brutal,” reflecting the widespread concern over the conditions and handling of those arrested during the unrest.
