India has officially submitted its bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad, marking a bold step toward its larger dream of welcoming the Olympic Games in 2036. The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) confirmed that its delegation presented the proposal at the Commonwealth Sport headquarters in London this week, backed fully by the country’s central government.
This move is seen as a major milestone in India’s sporting journey, combining national pride, international ambition, and a long-term strategy to elevate its global sports standing.
A Step Toward the Olympic Dream
Harpal Singh, a member of the IOA’s executive council and also part of the Commonwealth Sport sports committee, expressed that the bid was more than just about staging a global event.
“This is not just a bid to organize the Games,” Singh said. “It shows our promise to make the Games athlete-friendly, inclusive, sustainable, and ready for the future.”
He added that hosting the Commonwealth Games would not only highlight India’s organizational strength but also act as a foundation for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of bringing the Olympic Games 2036 to India.
Government Backing and Guarantees
The federal government approved the plan earlier this week, signing off on all required guarantees from various ministries. This support ensures India is prepared to provide financial, infrastructural, and security commitments to the Commonwealth Sport body.
For India, this approval is also symbolic — it demonstrates to the world that the country is serious about hosting mega international events.
Why Ahmedabad?
Ahmedabad, the city chosen for the bid, has been growing as a major sports hub in recent years. It already boasts the world’s largest cricket stadium — the Narendra Modi Stadium — which has hosted multiple global matches, including the ICC World Cup finals.
The city’s improved infrastructure, strong connectivity, and capacity to handle large gatherings make it an attractive candidate. Experts believe Ahmedabad offers both a modern image and traditional Indian culture, which could help deliver a memorable Games experience.
A Competitive Race for 2030
India is not the only country in the race. Canada and Nigeria have also submitted their proposals to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games. The final decision will be made at the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly, scheduled to be held in Glasgow in November this year.
The competition is tough, as Canada has a strong history with the Games, and Nigeria is positioning itself as the first African nation to host them. However, India hopes its successful record of managing large-scale events like the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi and the 2023 Cricket World Cup will play in its favor.
Struggles of the Commonwealth Games
In recent years, the Commonwealth Games have faced challenges. Many cities and countries have been reluctant to host due to high costs and financial risks.
For example:
* The 2026 Games, originally planned for Victoria, Australia, had to be canceled after the state pulled out citing rising costs. Glasgow then stepped in to host a smaller version in 2026.
* The 2022 Games were moved from Durban, South Africa, to Birmingham, UK, also due to financial difficulties.
These situations highlight the Games’ struggle to remain relevant and sustainable in today’s sports landscape. India’s proposal, however, emphasizes innovation, cost-efficiency, and long-term benefits, which may align with the Commonwealth Sport body’s goals.
A Vision Beyond Sports
India’s bid carries a vision that goes beyond medals and matches. The IOA has promised a Games that will:
* Put athletes at the center with world-class facilities.
* Ensure sustainability by using eco-friendly infrastructure.
* Involve local communities to promote inclusivity.
* Showcase Indian culture to the world while embracing international unity.
This vision aims to revive interest in the Commonwealth Games and also prove India’s readiness for the much bigger stage — the Olympics.
What’s at Stake for India?
If India succeeds, it will be the country’s second time hosting the Commonwealth Games after New Delhi 2010. However, this time, the stakes are higher because the event could serve as a direct trial run for the Olympics.
A successful 2030 Games would:
* Show the world India can handle global-scale events.
* Strengthen its credibility with international sporting bodies.
* Boost infrastructure development in Ahmedabad and surrounding regions.
* Inspire young athletes across the country.
For the government, it’s also about projecting India’s rise as a global power, not just in politics and economics but also in sports and culture.
The Road Ahead
The next few months will be crucial as India campaigns for support ahead of the Glasgow assembly. Behind the scenes, officials will work on presenting a detailed plan covering budgets, venues, athlete facilities, transport, and accommodation.
Winning the bid will not be easy, but India believes that its blend of ambition, history, and growing global presence makes it a strong contender. Whether it gets the final nod will depend on how convincing its case is compared to Canada and Nigeria.
